RECOVER includes observational cohort studies for 3 groups of people.
Researchers are looking at participants who did and did not have COVID-19 to learn why some people get Long COVID and others don’t. Researchers need to compare large groups of people to better understand Long COVID in everyone.
RECOVER includes participants of all races and ethnicities to understand how COVID-19 affects everyone and help us learn if different treatments may work best for different groups.
RECOVER includes participants of different ages and sexes to understand how COVID-19 affects everyone from babies to older adults and if different treatments may work best for different ages.
Thanks to you, we’re making important discoveries that help us gain a better understanding of Long COVID. The numbers below show how much the adult and pediatric cohort participants are doing. These numbers are as of April 2026. As the study continues, these numbers will grow. Completing study activities makes a big difference!
These surveys ask about how you are feeling. Everyone completes the surveys, whether you’ve had COVID-19 in the past, currently have COVID-19, or never had COVID-19.
Lab tests study the samples taken during procedures like biopsies for adults or saliva for kids.
Check-ups on your weight, height, blood pressure, heart rate, how your body reacts to standing up, and other tests.
RECOVER researchers look closely at the cells in the blood for things that may be related to Long COVID.
This test helps RECOVER researchers understand your sense of smell using scratch and sniff cards.
This test uses x-rays to see if your lungs are healthy or if you have trouble breathing.
This test looks at how far your fingers, thumbs, elbows, knees, and spine can bend.
A checkup for your thinking skills, like memory, focus, and problem-solving, to see how well your brain is working.

More than 300 deceased people of different ages, sexes, and racial and ethnic backgrounds are part of RECOVER tissue pathology studies. The deceased person’s next of kin, such as a family member or loved one, gives permission for their deceased loved one to be in the study.
