RECOVER is a research project that aims to learn about the long-term health effects of COVID-19, called Long COVID. RECOVER Studies help us better understand Long COVID to inform possible ways to diagnose and treat it. Learn more about RECOVER Studies and the progress we’re making to better understand Long COVID.
RECOVER Studies include the research RECOVER is doing that does not give a medicine or treatment for COVID-19. Instead, participants are paid to do tests and have check-ups in observational cohort studies. Researchers also test human tissue and find patterns in electronic health records.
Since we started enrolling in 2020, more than 30,000 participants joined RECOVER studies. We are grateful to everyone who participated in the first phase of this nationwide effort.
The first phase of the RECOVER adult study ended on October 31, 2025. Some participants will be invited to join a second phase to help guide the future of Long COVID research and care. The tissue pathology (autopsy) study will continue until March 2027.
The goal is to learn how we can better understand, diagnose, prevent, and treat Long COVID in the future. The main questions it will answer include:
Long COVID is when a person has one or more new, ongoing, or worsening symptoms of COVID-19 that last for at least three months after getting COVID-19. Their symptoms can include trouble breathing, a cough, feeling weak and tired, and problems with certain organs, such as their heart or kidneys.
