RECOVER is a research project to learn about the long-term health effects of COVID, called Long COVID. It is one of the largest nationwide research projects the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has ever done.
The goal is to learn how we can better prevent and treat Long COVID in the future. The main questions it will answer include:
Long COVID is when a person still has 1 or more symptoms of COVID that last for at least 3 months after first getting an infection. Symptoms can include trouble breathing, a cough, feeling weak and tired, and problems with certain organs, such as their heart or kidneys.
To understand Long COVID, RECOVER has different types of research that learn about Long COVID in different ways. Here are the 2 main types of research.
RECOVER Studies include studies that do not give a medicine or treatment for COVID. People can join cohort studies that observe them over time, and there is other research to look at electronic health records and organs and tissues of people who have died.
RECOVER Clinical Trials test new, possible treatments for Long COVID in people who join. The first clinical trials will focus on 5 Long COVID symptom areas, including sleep and changes in thinking.
RECOVER has study sites across the United States and Puerto Rico. RECOVER will include participants from diverse backgrounds in cohort studies and clinical trials. This includes people of all ages, races, ethnicities, and locations who have and haven’t had COVID. RECOVER is searching for answers to help everyone affected by Long COVID.
RECOVER researchers partner with patients and communities to make sure patients are the focus. RECOVER has Patient, Caregiver, and Community Representatives who are the voice for people with Long COVID. Representatives work closely with researchers to make sure RECOVER will meet their needs.
